The Best on Both Sides of the World
Along with The Springboks who beat New Zealand’s All Blacks in an exciting Tri Nations International rugby match on Saturday night, South African winery Kleine Zalze was celebrating this weekend after picking up “Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy” in the Tri-Nations Wine Challenge 2009 in Sydney for its Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.
The award was accepted on Friday night by owner Kobus Basson who had just arrived from London where he had collected “International Chenin Blanc Trophy” and “Stellenbosch White Trophy” in the International Wine Challenge 2009 the week before for Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2008.
This triple trophy success on both sides of the world is the latest achievement for the family-owned estate based just outside Stellenbosch which, in July this year, was named the number one South African wine in the UK on-trade*, a sector in which Kleine Zalze has built its name and an undisputed reputation for premium quality food-orientated wines.
Kobus Basson, owner of Kleine Zalze had this to say: “We are absolutely delighted to have won these latest prestigious awards. My thanks goes out to our winemaking team who, through extremely hard work in the pursuit of unquestionable quality, has proved once again that Kleine Zalze produces world-class wines. The Chenin Blanc Trophies are immensely important to us as this is a varietal we believe will become more and more prominent for South Africa. However, in many ways the Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy is even more significant as it demonstrates that, even against the toughest southern hemisphere competition, South Africa can and does produce winning premium red wine of a style which can be internationally applauded.”
